Food is a huge part of my life and because of that exercise has had to become a part of my life too. I love to eat, so I am learning to love my treadmill. I am also cognizant, that while tasty, not all the foods I put in my body are the healthiest and I must do things to balance everything out (i.e. exercising).
My dear friend, and fellow blogger, Lindsey has been posting some gorgeous food recipes as of late. In many of her recipes this curious little ingredient called flaxseed has been making an appearance. And until today, this little ingredient has been foreign to me. I figure she is a marathon runner and is in great shape and still loves to eat, so, if I can incorporate this little seed it definitely cannot hurt.
Flaxseed can be found at most health and speciality markets. Berkeley Bowl has a HUGE bulk section, and since I was going there anyways, I knew I would be able to find it. I saw it in two colors; golden and brown. I guess I was just in the mood for golden so I loaded some in a bag and was on my way. The golden flaxseed is about 1.75 per pound, not bad.
They look a lot like sesame seeds but do not taste like them. They are quite nutty and remind me of the wheat germ my Mom used to put on our cereal as kids. Not a bad flavor at all.
The wonderful things about these little seeds is that they pack a HUGE punch of fiber, omega-3 essential fatty acids and lignans. Flaxseed has been linked to positive effects on Cancer, Cardiovascular disease, Diabetes, inflammation and hot flashes.
So, now that you know what these things are and what they contain, how do you eat them? I just ate a tablespoon on their own. Delicious! Or you can add them to different foods like my friend does. I saw a wonderful recipe for flaxseed muffins but I am not much of a baker so I will stick to adding these to my savory dishes. It never hurts to get an extra little boost of healthiness, especially if you are like me and love to eat EVERYTHING! Now, I am just going to have to see if I can sneak them in the Husband’s food!
Cheers and happy eating!
