Off of highway 80, the Pinole Valley Road exit used to be fairly quiet. There was a small shopping center that housed a pint-sized Albertsons, a Blockbuster video store and a few other stores. Now, all within the last 5 years that once quiet shopping center is now hustling and bustling with the Trader Joes, Peets, Jamba Juice, Walgreens, a few other stores and now…wait for it…FIVE GUYS!
The Five Guys craze seemed to hit right about the time when the Husband and I were living in Thailand. We came home and people were talking but we had no idea what they were talking about. One day, not too long ago, we saw a sign that Five Guys was coming and it would be open 18 March 2013. Yip-ee! I love a good burger. When we lived in Thailand we had to go to the Hard Rock Cafe to get an American burger (we went there quite often).
At the front of the line there was a big box of peanuts for the taking. A nice little touch.
The place was pretty packed and by the time we had sat down to eat our meal the line was out the door.
Our friendly cashier. Everyone was really nice and you could definitely tell there was a thin layer of opening day nervousness but they were all smiles.
By our receipt it would appear we were order number 01 but I am guessing since it was 17:30 hours we were probably not truly number 01.
The Husband and I ordered a Little Bacon Burger with everything but the mushrooms. Unfortunately, the bacon grill had pooped out so we were minus the bacon but didn’t realize that until we went in to take our first bite. We took our burgers to the counter to get some bacon and that’s when they told us. My little bit of disappointment quickly turned into joy when they gave us 3 free food vouchers for the lack of bacon. Alright! Come on my next cheat day!
The fries come in different sizes but we found the regular size was plenty for the both of us. I found the fries to be really greasy but the Husband liked them. I loved my burger! It was juicy and full of flavor, even without the bacon.
I found myself not getting too excited about the lack of bacon, or the fact that no one bothered to tell us because they handled the situation well. It made me think of an episode of Kitchen Nightmares on relaunch night…they are doing their best but sometimes there will be some hiccups along the way. A good meal and I finally know what all the hype was about.
